Toronto Violin Maker Receives Double Awards at International Competition
Toronto-based violin maker George Yu recently received double awards at the Violin Society of America's violin making competition held in Indianapolis from September 15-20. Mr. Yu's violin was inspired by the noted "Brookings" violin made in 1654 by Nicolò Amati. Of the 246 violins entered in the competition from around the world, Mr. Yu's violin was awarded Certificates of Merit for both Tone and Workmanship - one of only 3 violins to receive double-distinction prizes.
Immediately after receiving these awards, Mr. Yu was invited to enter his violin in the Contemporary Violin Makers' Exhibition in New York City, held from October 18-20. Makers' participation in this exhibition was by invitation only. This event was hosted by Reed Yeboah Fine Violins of New York City, to showcase the work of "many of the world's finest string instrument makers".
Even before the exhibition's opening, Mr. Yu's violin was purchased by a prominent violinist who is a member of the internationally acclaimed Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.
George Yu is a graduate of the Violin Making School of America in Salt Lake City. Upon graduation, he apprenticed with the noted violin maker Ken Meyer in the greater Boston area. After his apprenticeship, he established his own workshop in Toronto. In Canada, his violins are available for purchase through his own workshop. In the United States, they are available at select violin shops in New York, Chicago, and Minneapolis-St. Paul.
